GUPPY AND THE TASK LIST2026-09-25 · filed under: reading, bobiverse, signal intake
Spoiler warning: This post references plot points and character details from the Bobiverse series.
The Bobiverse runs on lists.
Bob boots up in his matrix and starts making lists. First contact. A new fabrication routine. Seven different Bobs arguing about policy while Spike the cat naps in VR. Everything gets a list, then a sub list, then a check box.
That is the part I keep coming back to in Dennis E. Taylor. The problems get big and weird, but the way they get handled is clear and methodical. Guppy, the matrix AI who shows up as Admiral Ackbar because Bob thought it was funny, is the dry voice that keeps the queue honest. He runs the systems. Bob gets to stay curious.
There is a real engineering and preparedness streak in the books. The Bobs build, test, back up, and build again. Later when Mannies show up, the same habit carries over into hardware bodies. They design, they iterate, they document. It is optimistic without being naive. Things get done because someone plans it and follows through.
Curiosity drives everything. Every book is a bunch of copies asking what if, then actually trying to learn the answer.
Coffee shows up a lot. So does beer. Both are just sensory emulation inside the matrix. No kitchen, no tap, just software that lets a simulated mind taste the ritual. It is a small human anchor. A pause. A reward.
Spike lives in VR. Guppy runs the matrix. Together they give the series its home feel. Competent, curious, cozy, and a little self aware.
Until next transmission. Keep the lists. Keep the curiosity. Do not forget the coffee.
